Interlude: Atomic Doll
As Hawkins is delving into the past of the Danger Team, I decided to sprinkle these one-page vignettes of the modern team in as a way to introduce them and keep the narrative fresh. The past of the team is interesting, but the modern members are who the book will eventually be about, so best for the readers to learn who they are now.
Thus the Atomic Doll, snapping off plastic outer casings to expose her robotic origins that much more. I challenged Ed to rise to the occasion on this one, unwilling to accept any simple linework over the complex robotic character here. And I am very pleased to say he rose to the occasion like a champ- BWS would be proud.
ED’S NOTES
These are always great. The stand-alone one-pagers about specific heroes have ALWAYS been ingrained in my memory, whether they’re origins, or Snack cake ads.
This one is NO exception. It should be read calmly. Even tempered and slow paced.
Know that beneath the outer appearances and under the surface, there are innumerable computations and calculations occurring, in order for this character to grow, assimilate human personality traits, and to more or less fit in with the society they’ve been programmed to protect and learn from.
A modern-day Pinocchio story, but if I can give a personality to this page, as you’re seeing this scene take place? I would set it to classical music, whether it’s interpreted as some sort of serial killer, or overly intellectual vibe is left up to you, the reader.
Man, did I dig drawing all of that circuitry and showing that clean exterior. It was such a contrast!
